The questions used in the video below are all grade 5 examples. Grade 4s can still use each strategy, but can simplify the questions by using only a 2 digit x 1 digit.

October Update
For the month of October, our reading focus will be on summarizing, inferring and using evidence from the text to support our thinking. Book talks and recommendations will be something we begin to talk about towards the end of this month.
Our writing focus will be to build on how to respond to a question in an organized paragraph. Some students are even starting to respond to questions using multiple organized paragraphs. Ask to see your child's language book every once in awhile… they’ve recently just completed a response to, “What ONE word would you use to describe what it is like to be a parent?” Their responses were quite entertaining!
Much of our oral literacy focus over the next few months will come through presentations and active speaking and listening while working with a group.
In math, we continue this week to work on mental math strategies to help us solve addition, subtraction, multiplication and division questions. Next up will be representing, comparing, and ordering numbers.
In science, Grade 4's are currently studying Rocks and Minerals, which will be wrapping up this week as they are working hard in class on their culminating task. The grade 5's have just wrapped up a unit on Matter.
In social studies, the Grade 4's will begin their Canada unit next week. The focus for the rest of this month will be on learning where Canada’s provinces and territories are as well as their capitals.
